Research & Development Specialist, Agriculture

Job description
The primary responsibility of this position as Research & Development Specialist is to participate in the development of superior cotton varieties by assisting in the execution of all technical and agronomic aspects of the cotton testing program; support research and development activities by assisting in seed processing and field management for all contracted research and development trials conducted by the testing program; and, assist in testing station operations through equipment procurement, design, construction recommendations, and maintenance. The position is located in the Wilson, NC area.
The incumbent will:
- Coordinate and execute all agronomic aspects of the testing program, at both on- and off-site locations, including seed processing, packaging, planting, field maintenance, harvest, and ginning;
- Assist with operation and maintenance of all field related equipment;
- Ensure compliance with all existing safety and regulatory standards;
- Be responsible for seed processing and seed storage activities with a continual focus on improvement of methods and efficiency (ginning, and maintenance of related equipment);
- Assist with all data collection for field maps, field books, note criteria, and performance test results;
- Assist cotton testing staff with daily activities.
Your qualifications
The selected candidate is required to possess the following:
- B.S. degree in an agricultural technical discipline, or relevant equivalent experience;
- Basic knowledge and familiarity with agriculture and agricultural research;
- Regional knowledge of agriculture research and production systems, equipment, and agronomics;
- Excellent organizational and human relation skills, as well as attention to detail;
- A proven work history of acting as a team player with outstanding organizational and analytical skills;
- Ability to project a positive technical image;
- Proficient knowledge of personal computers and MS software, as well as data base management;
- Basic understanding of, or experience with, mechanical maintenance and operations, including vehicles, agricultural equipment or tractors;
- Ability and willingness to obtain a Class A CDL.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S. degree in a plant biological or agricultural science, such as agronomy, entomology, plant pathology, plant physiology, etc.;
- Experience, or familiarity, with the operation and maintenance of agriculture field equipment including tractors, planters, harvesters, trucks and other field equipment;
- 1 to 3 year's experience in agriculture research.
