Assistant Maize Breeder

Ingredion has an opportunity at our Indianapolis North Office location for an Assistant Maize Breeder. The Assistant Breeder will work with the Plant Science team to breed, develop, and characterize Ingredion specialty varieties, including, but not limited to, Amylose, WaxiPro™ and Waxy hybrids. In addition, the Assistant Maize Breeder will provide support for Seed Production and Manufacturing functions and agronomy support for commercial operations.
As Assistant Maize Breeder your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in all aspects of the Ingredion Specialty Maize breeding program to improve yield and agronomic performance.
- Designing and setting up field nurseries and yield trials, plant test plots, pollinate, harvest and record relevant plant data throughout the growing season
- Coordinating and supervising winter nursery work in off-season locations
- Coordinating with Plant Science Team to advance candidate varieties for commercialization.
- Leveraging local research and data to support and advance Specialty hybrids throughout Ingredion’s global network, in Europe, South America, and Asia.
- Capturing appropriate data from observation/research trials for Hybrid Management and grower support and communication.
- Coordinating, monitoring, and advising maize seed production with the Seed Production Manager. Visiting seed fields at various times of the year and assessing the economic value of varieties used in seed production.
- Acting as a representative of Ingredion to provide agronomic support for grain contracting efforts and providing seed production support to Ingredion’s global maize programs.
- Participating in Global Ag Council Meetings to represent Ingredion’s Maize Breeding Program and update on global specialty grain issues.
- Aligning with Ingredion Sustainability efforts to develop and implement long-term crop sustainability plans.
- Working with our internal Research and Technology group to develop new crop functionality and innovative market products. Understanding the impacts of plant genetics on protein and starch structure as well as functionality.
- Interacting with key internal and external partners on molecular breeding. Communicating issues and opportunities with our Plant Science Group and others to address emerging genetic technologies.
- Interacting with Specialty Grains teams around the world to ensure the highest quality global grain supply.
- Maintaining memberships in relevant professional organizations as a representative of Ingredion.

Qualified Candidates will have:
- MS in Plant Breeding and Genetics or closely related degree with rigorous background in plant biology and experience with corn.
- Interest in grain composition traits and development of novel starch, protein and fiber functionality for the wet and dry milling.
- Understanding of the Agricultural and Seed industry and their networks.
- An understanding of agronomic and corn production management.
- Demonstrated analytical problem solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively on teams.
- Proven skill in relationship management and listening skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work outdoors and lift 35 to 50 lbs.
- Domestic and International travel of up to 15% required.
