Job summary
Responsible for developing new marketable melon hybrids for our global markets including North, Central and South America, Middle East and Europe. Assistant Melon Breeder will reporting to the VP Research-Cucurbit Crops and interacting with the breeding teams at different global research and trial stations.
Responsibilities
- Manage all components of successful commercial melon breeding program, which includes management of existing germplasm, acquisition of new germplasm, development of elite inbred lines, hybrids, and production of breeder seed of elite lines
- Keep abreast with the crop, traits, and the latest plant breeding, genetics and biotechnological discoveries
- Knowledge of MAS, Double Haploid and biotechnological tools
- Translate the crop R&D strategy into market-oriented melon products
- Support breeding program and implement the R&D strategy in cucurbit crops.
- Establish good rapport with global sales, product development and market teams
- Supervise, train and manage seasonal field helpers
- Travel domestically and internationally
Qualifications
- PhD in Plant Breeding or related sciences with 3+ years of experience in melon/vegetable/field crop breeding or MS with 5+ years of experience in field crop breeding.
- Substantial knowledge of melon traits and breeding procedures
- Strong knowledge of marker technology, phytopathology, plant physiology, crop management and Biostatistics
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Works well within a team environment.
- Ability to work in range of working conditions.
- Command of MS office and statistical softwares (R, JMP, SAS and SPSS)
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
- Knowledge of Spanish language is a plus.
