Under the Nunhems brand, Bayer CropScience offers expert advice and high-quality seed varieties of 28 vegetable crops. We are present in all major vegetable production areas around the globe. To be stationed in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy or in Murcia in Spain, we are looking for a Head of Breeding EuMeA.
Job purpose
Be responsible that in an effective and efficient way a continuous flow of commercially successful varieties is ensured by managing, steering consolidating and approving the processes of continuous crop improvement for Nunhems crops in Nunhems-specific markets , with a short time-to-market and within the departmental budget by designing, consolidating deciding and implementing the breeding strategy for Nunhems in line with the overall R&D plan of the strategic plan and approve the crop specific breeding policy within the breeding strategy.
Major Accountabilities
- He will give input to the different R&D TL in defining the targets for the different breeding programs of which he’s responsible.
- He will be updated by the R&D TL of the specific crops of the targets (breeding segments and traits) defined in the VISTA.
- Ensure having key state of the art technologies available in the breeding area, apply available technologies and breeding methods, that have impact on the breeding programs in terms of efficiency and output, as well as keep up-to-date with respect to relevant scientific developments and analyze potential impacts of new technologies and breeding methods in the breeding programs in order to ensure a constant flow of commercially successful varieties.
- Design and advise the Managing Director of R&D regarding the R&D strategy in the R&D MT and the Global Head Breeding regarding the Breeding strategy, and policies by means of drawing up reports, feedback, proposals and performing technical market scans in line with the breeding strategy in order to facilitate, advise and enable divisional and corporate management decision making.
- Design, propose, consolidate, advise, decide, and implement the long and short term breeding strategy in line with the R&D strategy and within the Nunhems corporate strategy in order to determine the framework of the breeding policy.
- Formulate, monitor and continuously improve and approve the crop specific breeding policies, procedures and processes within Nunhems in line with the long term and short term breeding and R&D strategy in order to ensure efficiently reaching the breeding goals.
- Prepare, consolidate, implement and manage the breeding department budgets within the guidelines of Nunhems, and advise the division controller to provide appropriate tools that allows the head of breeding to manage the budget and to provide information to the Global Head of Breeding, the R&D management team and the breeding teams in order to ensure a correct and optimal realization of the breeding budget and control of breeding costs.
- Manage and steer the breeding department, and the breeding programs, plans, procedures and policies in one or more countries within EMEA, Americas or Asia Pacific in line with the breeding strategy and corporate values and vision within
- Nunhems in order to ensure an efficient and effective operating breeding department and other departments.
- Manage, direct, and coordinate in cooperation with HR, the personnel flow within the breeding department, including appraisal, training and development and career planning by using HR instruments, guidelines, procedures and decide in order to select and maintain competent employees and ensure an efficient and effective functioning breeding department.
- He is responsible for the development of processes and procedures and a proper follow up on them. Also he is responsible for taking measures which increase workers safety.
- He is responsible that at all times the Department is working in a compliant way.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- PhD in plant breeding or genetics;
- Thorough knowledge of breeding, practically and theoretically;
- Knowledge of affiliated technologies;
- Eight years’ experience in a breeding position or research position
- Intercultural management experience;
- Language skills: English (fluent), German, French, Spanish (favorable);
- International orientation;
- Experience in the seed business;
- Experience in:
- HRM;
- Management;
- Finance and accounting;
- Business strategy;
- Project management;
- Knowledge of marketing;
- Functional competencies: convincing, solving problems, analytical thinking, organizing, entrepreneurship, innovative.
- High frequency of international travel (25 – 30%);
- Direct reports in 6 countries.
