About Syngenta

Syngenta is a global leader in agriculture; rooted in science and dedicated to bringing plant potential to life. Each of our 28,000 employees in more than 90 countries work together to solve one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: growing more food with fewer resources. A diverse workforce and an inclusive workplace environment are enablers of our ambition to be the most collaborative and trusted team in agriculture. Our employees reflect the diversity of our customers, the markets where we operate and the communities which we serve. Join us and help shape the future of agriculture.

Role Purpose

  • Drive genetic gain by
  • Improvement of data access (phenotypic, environment, production, image analysis data...)
  • Improvement of data quality (rules and statistics)
  • improvement of data analysis (trait development, computational tools in breeding, product placement)
  • improvement of performance criteria
  • Integration / development of new tools including phenotyping with vegetable expertise

Accountabilities

  • Guarantee the access to data needed by Market Segment Teams and (Germplasm Development Teams) to perform their trialing (and breeding) activities. Ensure that phenotypic, environment, production, and any new types of data are accessible in format and systems that al-low fast queries, QC and transformation to be used by different tools and different purposes. Strong connection with Analytics & Data Science (A&DS), IT, Pipeline Enablement is needed
  • Support the Breeding Trial specialists and Germplasm Development Teams community by providing statistical guidance and helping performing data analyses when tools are not yet available. Help Breeding Trial specialists and Germplasm Development Teams to gather all the phenotypic information for Genomic Selection predictions and hybrid promotions. Secure that data are consolidated, data quality is checked, and data analysis are performed in time.
  • Train the Market Segment Teams and Germplasm Development Teams community with statistical methods to ensure that quality data are used in all the trialing and breeding activities (hybrid placement, hybrid selection Trait development)
  • Support the adoption of new tools by the Market Segment Teams and Germplasm Development Teams community
  • Contribute to the development of IT tools that allow a more efficient access and use of phenotypic and environmental data in partnership with A&DS and RDIT teams
  • Contribute to the development of new methodologies for data analysis (phenotypic aggregation, genetic similarity, interaction with environment, image analysis from new phenotypes, phenotypic imputation, integration of different types of data…), in partnership with A&DS. Ensure standardization within crops and with other market segment teams.
  • Assess the quality of data at trial level and trait level. Propose data collection protocols improvements. Participate to trial network performance assessment. Analyze data to refine experimental design (e.g. locations, reps, traits,..)
  • Evaluate the performance of late stage pipeline and connect with commercial. Data visualization and consolidation for Product Advancement Meeting.
  • Codevelop performance criteria (genetic gain, performance stability, genetic diversity…) to support the Market Segment and Germplasm Development Team community to improve the assessment of the quality of our breeding processes
  • Contribute to the development and the validation of Crop Models thanks to a strong interaction with A&DS teams. Strong interaction also needed with trialing team on this topic for the validation of the models and access to the data needed to develop the models or to perform the environmental characterization. Support the Market Segment and Germplasm Team community to better integrate environment characterization information in all breeding and placement activities.
  • Project management for development of applications linked to data access, data analysis and data visualization.
  • Interpret field data / trial results and generate reports or data visualizations

  • Ph.D. or master’s with several years of experience in one of the following areas: Statistics, Data Management, Modeling, Plant or Animal Breeding, Quantitative Genetics, Bioinformatics, or related field.
  • Advanced expertise in statistics (descriptive, linear and mixed models, multi-variate analyses…)
  • Advanced expertise in agronomy (interaction with environment, biotic and abiotic stresses plants, farming practices,...)
  • Fluency in open source programming languages (e.g. R, Python..) commonly used for data manipulation and computational statistics.
  • Experience with visualization platforms (e.g. Tableau, Spotfire...)
  • Proficiency in programming computational and statistical algorithms for complex data sets
