Main Goal
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
To work closely with the Plant Breeders and Product Managers to test and screen germplasm for seed quality and producibility and to work on projects for improvement in Garden Bean and Sweet Corn seed production.
Job description
POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
Responsible for planning, trialing and testing genetics from breeding research to screen for producibility and quality. Work closely with R&D and Product Management to make critical decisions on product advancement. Develop and analyze test for improvements in production and seed quality. Work on solutions for production related challenges as directed.
Essentials duties and responsibilities:
- Manage Production Research trial plots
- Develop and perform trials and analysis to evaluate the producibility of new breeding lines of Sweet Corn and Garden Beans
- Work closely with R&D and Product Management to make advancement decisions based on trial and testing results
- Plan and develop trials in outside production areas for local issues and make recommendations on production locations
- Manage and advise on cultural production practices in trial locations
- Plan and manage corn inbred timing trials
- Work on seed quality improvements in pathology and physiology of Sweet Corn seed
- Work on improvements of Garden Beans for germination, vigor, shelf life and seed uniformity
- Work closely with the production team to develop improved cultural practices
- Coordinate with production personnel to observe and analyze productions in different environments and locations
- Screen Garden Beans and Sweet Corn inbreds for genotype vs. herbicide susceptibility
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of production-related best practices through professional journals, industry conferences and contacts, and other credible sources
- Gather, analyze, summarize and report data and information related to assigned projects
- Develop and manage Large Seed Production Research budget
- Other duties as assigned
Profile
Required knowledge & Skills
- Agronomist specialized in seed production with high level of technical knowledge
- Good interpersonal skills
- Good computer skills
- Strong analytical skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to prepare formal reports and present them to management
Education & work experience required:
- BS in Agriculture or related field preferred, or the equivalent
- Minimum of three years of experience in vegetable seed production
