Breeding Research Asistant

Location: Davis, California, USA

POSITION SUMMARY

GreenVenus, LLC is focused on accelerating innovation in agriculture with proprietary products and platforms enabling sustainable food production for a growing population. With next generation plant propagation, speed breeding, and technologies for hybridization of crops, GreenVenus seeks to improve the quality of food for consumers and benefits for growers.

We are seeking a breeding research assistant that will support breeding pipelines in multiple crops. The ideal candidate will manage operational aspects of our breeding pipelines with an eye to process improvement.  The candidate will support breeding activities related to pollination, transplant, seed harvest, phenotyping, genotyping, data collection, inventory maintenance, and seed shipping.  The ideal candidate will have a passion for agriculture and experience in an applied breeding program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support greenhouse activities related to line development and hybrid seed production.
  • Organize and establish field trial experiments.
  • Collect data in greenhouse and field trials.
  • Harvesting, cleaning, and shipping of seed in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and current seed inventory, molecular marker, and pathology data in breeding database.
  • Manage resources
  • Participate in the site’s safety program.

RESPONSIBILITY

Reports to:     Breeding Lead
Supervisory:  To be determined

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Genetics, or Crop Science. Previous experience working in an applied breeding program is a plus.

DESIRED KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Experience in agriculture
  • Professional, assertive and clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work under varying climate conditions in the field and greenhouse
  • Language skills: Fluent English required

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Frequent: Speaking; hearing; sitting; use of hands/fingers; handling or feeling objects, tools or controls; close vision; color vision; peripheral vision; ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent: Standing; walking indoors; reaching with hands and arms; stooping; kneeling; crouching; safely lifting and/ or move up to 60lbs.
  • General: Moderate noise level, similar to typical office environment with computers, printers and light traffic. 

Work Authorization: U.S. Work Authorization

Start Date:  ASAP

Position:  Full time

Compensation:  Salary based on experience with a competitive benefits package.
