Main Goal
To support tomato and pepper breeding programs in accordance with the Company strategy and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary breeding and research team. The Molecular Geneticist contributes to the definition of the most efficient molecular breeding strategy to address R&D targets for your specific crops. The Molecular Geneticist works with a multidisciplinary team including Plant Breeders, Pathologists, Statisticians, Data Analysts and Bioinformaticians. The Molecular Geneticist develops and executes research projects in the area of molecular genetics and quantitative genetics. The overarching goal of the Molecular Geneticist role is to improve breeding methods and accelerate genetic gain to deliver superior seeds and vegetable products.
Job description
- Participate in projects from initiation to delivery of readily-usable molecular breeding tools or trait-specific genetic information and ensure proper project advancement within the framework of agreed-upon strategies for assigned crops.
- Transfer of molecular tools and methods designed for improving efficiency of selection and speed to market to genotyping support teams.
- Support breeding teams to facilitate the implementation of new methods for improvement and optimization of the breeding process such as genomic selection and other marker-based breeding strategies.
- Develop intellectual property and ensure freedom to operate within the context of trait germplasm patents.
- Identify and propose internal and external collaborations with experts in the field of plant breeding, quantitative genetics, molecular breeding and genomics to maintain and improve competitiveness of the company in the field of modern plant breeding.
- Participate in research planning meetings with Marketing, the Scientific Board, and other scientists related to various projects. Prepare and contribute to project documentation, scientific reports, publications, and presentations that clearly convey progress and challenges.
- As a member of a global Research team, support both global and regional activities and priorities
Profile
- PhD in Biological Science, in a relevant field of molecular breeding or Quantitative Genetics.
- At least 5 years of successful experience managing research projects, ideally in private industry.
- Experience with molecular breeding and the deployment of strategies used in plant breeding.
- Familiarity with large molecular data sets generated with the latest molecular marker and sequencing technologies
- Strong background in statistical methods and experimental design
- Fluent with R, JMP, SAS or other statistics software.
- Strong understanding of bioanalysis (sequence analysis, genome annotation, comparative genomics and systems biology) would be a plus
- Fluency in Python, PERL Visual Basic or other programming language would be a plus
- Understanding of Plant Pathology and Plant Physiology is a plus
- Fluent in written and oral English language is essential. Fluency in Spanish and/or French is a plus
- Supervisory experience is a plus
