Genetics Application Lead, Pepper

Location: Davis, California, USA

Main Goal

As an integral part of pepper breeding teams, impact product development, trait discovery and germplasm management efforts through rapid use of genetic information and technology.

Job description

Act as a link between Discovery programs and Commercial breeding programs to accelerate the deployment of novel traits, new breeding tools and accelerate genetic gain.
Lead genetic application projects

  • Contribute to the definition and deployment of a germplasm pool management strategy
  • Propose and set up strategies for effective novel trait deployment 
  • Implement phenotyping methodology adapted to the relevant breeding targets
  • Support adoption of new molecular breeding schemes and approaches
  • Lead the validation and consolidation of genetic information into trait knowledge for effective breeding application

In collaboration with Pre-Breeders, Breeders and Scientific functions participate to discovery projects: 

  • Coordinate the development of discovery breeding populations 
  • Contribute to the generation of genetic information 
  • Support breeders in data management and experimental design
  • Contribute to the development of new phenotyping methods and approaches in support of relevant breeding targets
  • Contribute to new idea generation, invention disclosures and patent filings

As a member of the HMC R&D, Genetic Application Leads participates to a cross crop strategic team to explore new approaches and methods and contribute to the technology strategy in support of breeding programs

Profile 
Education 
MS or PhD in Plant Breeding, Statistical Genetics or related domains
0-3 years in Vegetable genetics experience plants preferred
Local and English language required
Highly motivated and innovative 

  • Excellent leadership and people skills, effective verbal communication, and ability to thrive in a team based work environment 
  • Project management experience, good self-organization and autonomy
  • Background and experience with crop production, physiology, breeding methodologies, genetics, and statistics and experimental design applied to plant breeding
  • Proficiency with database applications, spreadsheet software, Microsoft Office, Statistical and trail design tools.
  • Knowledge of molecular markers, quantitative genetics, pathology, genetic statistical theory
