Internships keep young people ahead of the economic crisis

Europe
August 4, 2015

Have you ever thought about what it’d be like to work for Monsanto? Are you savvy enough to read past the online gossip and lies about us? Here’s what some ‘real people’ had to say about our internship programme.

Currently in Europe, mental health issues among young people are more common than ever, influenced by the economic crisis and, in some countries, even war. According to the International Labour Office, the youth unemployment rate in Ukraine is at 16.8%. These youth have a high level of education, with many having achieved higher education or some form of vocational training.

Giving young people the chance to partake in work experience is one way to encourage them on a path not just to later employment but also to happiness. Last year, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs focussed its efforts on an International Youth Day campaign for youth and mental health to draw awareness to the importance of providing young people confidence-building opportunities.

In this blog post, students living in Ukraine, from a range of technical backgrounds, share their experiences of Monsanto’s one-year internship between the summer of 2014 and June 2015.

Every day of the internship I realised that I was doing things that I liked. I woke up in the morning with a desire to go to work. The high level of organisation, highly qualified specialists, courteous and friendly staff left only positive emotions after work,” said Denis Mushtin, who is graduating this year from the Zhytomyr National University of Agriculture and Ecology, Department of Technical Engineering, Agro-Mechanisation.

Interns like Mushtin spent time in five departments: commercial, technology, breeding, production and marketing. The time they spent in each department was an essential principle of the programme strategy to let them get a feel for each function, and to see what areas they liked best. Some spent time on a farm in Poltava, while others were in a laboratory testing seed parental lines.

Anna Filatova from the Kyiv National University of Bio-resources, Department of Biotech, said, “The internship programme

helped me to try different areas of the agricultural business, open new possibilities… Participation in many projects and events helped me to get to know the company inside.”

Interns also got a chance to understand how cutting-edge technologies and seed varieties play a role in Ukrainian agriculture. Vadym Zakharchuk from the Vinnytsia National Agrarian University, Department of Agronomy, took part in Monsanto’s DEKALB seed brand production in the central-Ukrainian region of Vinnytsia.

“It has one of the biggest areas of maize crops in the central region. The breeding department was the most interesting one for me; in the sense of the work which is conducted to investigate, study and correctly estimate hybrids which will be grown in our country in the future. The technology department has the task of studying new hybrids of oilseed rape and maize in various regions with different technologies.”

Some of the students were inspired to pursue a career with us after the programme had ended.

I see myself in the sales department,” said Zakharchuk.

I would like to continue in production because I will be able to better demonstrate and improve my knowledge on mechanisation and agronomy,” said Vasyl Vovk from the National University of Bio-resources, Department of Biosystems Engineering, Agro-Mechanisation.

If you happen to live in Ukraine and are looking for an internship opportunity next summer, why not give us a try? Here’s a two-and-a-half minute video showcasing the internship opportunity.
